Old Gold Reviews: The Iceman

A dark portrait of the life and career of a contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon). The events that unfold almost appear mafia like at times, the murdering is ceaseless but keep in mind it is based entirely on a real killer who was dubbed the 'iceman' in the 80s. Shannon is fantastically intense, stoic in the most stressful situations but a beast to be unleashed at any time. His tall, thin yet strong stature imposes itself on every scene, which can be alarming and comforting at the same time. It's a biopic somewhere between Taxi Driver and Leon, there is a caring side to Shannon's character but he is also frighteningly realistic and utterly psychotic. Shannon is incredible and is backed by an impressive cast such as Winona Ryder as his oblivious wife, Chris Evans as his ever more manic hitman partner and Ray Liotta as his mob boss. Also look out for Ross from Friends looking like David Seaman of Arsenal fame.
8/10
