Old Gold Reviews: Sightseers

Sightseers is an independent British film that appeared on our screens late last year, its small level of marketing mirrors its quaint setting while its immediate cult popularity is testament to its strangely entertaining appeal.

Tina (Alice Lowe) and Chris (Steve Oram) star as an oddball couple setting out on an erotic caravanning odyssey of England’s minor tourist attractions like the Crich Tramway Museum and the Keswick Pencil Museum. You may well question why you’ve come to watch such a film but this will be answered once the laughs start to come and the bodies begin to build up as you follow the journey of these characters that can be endearing and frightening within equal measure.

With inspiration and financial backing from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright, Ben Wheatley is able to direct his own blend of slasher comedy with a distinctive British flavour. It can be quite disturbing at times but even these moments may have you either laughing out loud or averting your eyes in horror.
